The four storage rules

Temperature. Humidity. UV. Handling.

1. Stable temperature (65–72°F)

Wide temperature swings can warp the slab plastic over years. Avoid attics, garages, and rooms with poor climate control.

2. Low humidity (40–50%)

High humidity damages the cardboard inside the slab over time. Use silica packs in storage boxes. Dehumidifier in humid climates.

3. No direct sunlight

UV light fades the holo layer and yellows the cardstock — visible through clear slabs over time. Store in opaque boxes or away from windows.

4. Slab sleeves

Plastic slab sleeves protect from surface scratches when handling. Especially important for premium tuxedo and BGS slabs that scratch easily.

Storage equipment recommendations

Travel & transport

For transporting slabs (to a card show, to a buyer): use a hard plastic case with foam padding. Never use unpadded paper sleeves or loose stacking in a bag — slab corners chip easily on impact.

Common questions

Questions we hear all the time.

Does sunlight really damage slabs?
Yes, over time. UV light fades holo prints and yellows old cardstock. Even indirect window light can cause visible fading over 5+ years. Display in shade or use UV-filtering acrylic.
Should I store slabs vertically or horizontally?
Either works. Vertical (like books) is most space-efficient. Horizontal stacking is fine for short-term storage but can scratch top slabs if you don't use sleeves.
What about humidity damage to the cardboard inside?
Slabs aren't fully sealed against humidity. Long-term high-humidity storage can warp the cardboard inside and even cause minor mold on vintage cards. Silica packs prevent this.
